In early 2009, the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision launched Waisda?, a groundbreaking labelling game for audiovisual archive materials. Players were challenged to take part in an online game in which they were asked to add tags to video materials in order to help make the audiovisual archives easier to search. Following the evaluation of the successful pilot phase, Waisda? is now being continued and improved in alliance with the TV programme Man bijt hond produced by public broadcasting organisation NCRV.

Because of its appealing and varied content, Man bijt hond is the perfect vehicle for Waisda?. What’s more, episodes of Man bijt hond are already broken up into separate items, making it possible to play short clips rather than whole episodes.

In addition to the new content from Man bijt hond, the game itself is also being improved in the light of lessons learned from the evaluation. For example, following recommendations made by the Game research project GATE - there are now new ways for players to score points and win badges for completing tasks and reaching specific milestones. Different levels are also being added to the game.

In order to improve integration, the new version of Waisda? uses the infrastructure of the Netherlands Public Broadcasting system (NPO). For example, the NPO Player is used to play back items from Man bijt hond. But essentially, Waisda? remains unchanged: it’s a fun way of making audiovisual heritage easier to search.

The game is being developed by Q42. VU University Amsterdam’s Business Web & Media Section is also conducting additional research into the processing of public tags and improvements to the game as part of the European research programme PrestoPRIME.
